CPU Market Witnesses 33% Growth In Q1 2024, Intel & AMD Down On Both Client & Server Side But Market Stabilizing

In the latest market research published by JPR (Jon Peddie Research), it is mentioned that the client CPU market reached 62 million units, an increase of 33% versus the previous year (Q1 2023) and a decrease of -9.4% vs the previous quarter (Q4 2023). The notebook CPU market remained dominant with a slew of new AI PC options from AMD (Ryzen AI) and Intel (Core Ultra) which saw tremendous shipments in the recent quarter. This led to the notebook market gaining a 73% sharehold while desktop CPUs only amounted to 27% of the share.

The growing client-side market also saw the iGPU market reach 56 million units which is a year-on-year increase of 30%. JPR reports that the iGPU market will have a 98% penetration in the PC client market which means that AIBs will only make up a small portion of the segment.

On the client side, AMD will be introducing its next-gen Zen 5 core architecture with several Ryzen products for mobile and desktop consumers. Intel is also anticipated to launch its next-gen Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake CPUs for both desktop and laptop platforms

. As for their Q1 2024 earnings, both Intel and AMD saw the client segment decline. Intel posted a -14.7% decline versus the last quarter and a gain of +29% versus last year while AMD posted a -6.3% decline versus the last quarter and a +85% gain compared to last year.

The report also highlights the server-side shipments which saw a decrease of -13% from the last quarter and a decline of -17% from the previous year. It is likely that customers of Intel and AMD server CPUs are waiting for their next-gen products which are expected to launch in the coming months. AMD is anticipated to unveil its next-gen EPYC Turin CPUs based on the Zen 5 architecture while Intel will be offering its Xeon 6 lineup in P-Core “Granite Rapids” & E-Core “Sierra Forest” CPU flavors.

Jon Peddie, president of JPR, commented, “Q1’s decrease in client CPU shipments from four quarters of positive news threw a few off, especially investors. It’s actually good news in a sense if it is an indication that the market has stabilized and has returned to its traditional cyclic behavior. If that’s the case, and we think it is, Q2 will also be down.”

Although the market was generally in decline versus the previous quarter, this is expected to be a traditional cyclic behavior which means that the next quarter should also be down and we should start seeing positive results in the second half of 2024 which is generally the peak season for the PC market.
